What type of church is Zion?
Zion is a Lutheran church, that’s kind of like Catholic, right? While our roots go back over 500years ago (before denominations), we are our own branch of the Christian |Church. Rooted in that long history, you may feel at home in our traditional worship service. Being Lutheran, one of our core beliefs is, “we are saved by grace through faith, as a gift, not by works, so no one can boast, (Galatians 5).”
Our actions (moral living, pursuing justice, etc.) are not how we earn God’s grace, but rather our actions are what we get to do in response to God’s gift of Jesus Christ. While rooted in tradition, we are also trying new ways to communicate this good news! So you may feel comfortable in our modern worship service, which is very casual, with a simple order of worship.
We are a part of the ELCA branch of Lutheran-Christians, and we value the priesthood of all believes, which means we believe all people have the purpose, talents, and abilities to share the grace and love of Jesus Christ.
What should I wear?
Regardless of which service or group you attend, we welcome you as you are! Overall, you’ll find most people dress on the casual side (shorts, jeans, skirts, t-shirts). And you’ll find some people prefer to wear a collar shirt, or tie. Whether you wear heals, flip flops, or sneakers, we’d love for you to walk on in and join us!
What styles of worship are there?
8:30 – Our traditional style of worship, when we sing hymns and worship responsively. We use the organ or piano in our singing. We hear Scriptures, and celebrate God’s gift of Holy Communion each week.
11:00 – Our Modern Praise style of worship. Zion’s Cornerstone band leads us in singing songs, and the order of worship is more informal and casual. We hear Scriptures, and celebrate God’s gift of Holy Communion each week.
What can I expect for my children?
Ultimately, your child(ren) will be fully welcome to participate at Zion! We believe the best way to learn is by doing, so your children can worship with you at both services, including spending time at our Kids’ Zone right in our sanctuary, so they can be engaged in worship. If you child needs a quieter space, we have a nursery space, where you can hear the worship service. While the nursery is available for you to use, there is no expectation your child needs to leave worship simply because they’re crying or fidgety (i.e. being a child).
During our Faith Formation Groups (9:45) – your child(ren) will be welcome into one of our age designated groups (Pre-K -2nd, 3rd-5th, Middle School (6th-8th), and High School). During that time, you can rejuvenate with a cup of free coffee at our Holy Grounds café, or visit one of our adult small groups.
